Remember those calendars that I was trying to use up? Well, the envelope project was great, but let’s face it, a girl can only go through so many envelopes. Also, some of the pictures didn’t really lend themselves to envelopes – they were more well suited to being left intact to be appreciated in their full glory. So I decided to use some of those to jazz up some plain Jane school workbooks that we had picked up ages ago at the thrift store (for something like 10¢ each).
The only real challenge for me was glue choice. I didn’t think a gluestick would cut it, so I started with plain white glue. But that made the paper all wrinkly and buckled. Boo. So I went with the gluestick, and to counter the fact that it wasn’t super sticky, I edged the notebooks with black electrical tape (it was all I had on hand!). Since the tape is stretchy, I found it difficult to get a nice straight line, but I figure the wavy unevenness just adds “charm”, or “character”, if you will…
The calendars that were sacrificed to the notebook project: paintings of pin-up girls (a friend’s old calendar and she figured I could do something crafty with it – bingo!), a few pages from a coffee calendar (you know, with the cheeky captions and the ’50s housewives), and a centrefold pull-out from a calendar all about windmills (like Hustler for wind energy enthusiasts?).
We’re keeping 2 notebooks for ourselves, but the rest will be gifts to friends.
